Review

Gunsan and Paris/ Goh, Chung Hwan (Art Critic)

ARONGDARONG is a team of twin. The regular tetrahedron symbolize the ego of the twin. Spread out, the four equilateral triangles will form a big regular triangle. Glued together, the four regular triangles converge to form a geometric figure with four vertexes. Then how has this figure came to symbolize the twin's self? It probably came from the fact that small regular triangle comes together to form a bigger equilateral triangle. The idea probably came from the fact that other regular triangles converge into the same vertexes. And most of all, the idea ultimately came from the fact that most things occur in the variations of the regular triangles. Symbols are often reasoned in cultural phenomenon. Hence appropriating a symbol for personal ego, for a personal identity, is unusual.

The artist explains the symbol in relatively great detail. This is something necessary. The artist's work involves playing variations of self symbol, expanding and regenerating it, and this is because the format develops to add meaning. The symbol of the self may change in the future, but at least for now, one an assume this mode of work will continue. The work of the artist is always mediated by her symbol in any way and this acts as a center point. The work and the ego can be seen as a whole, and as such, all the works of the artist can be seen as a process of realizing self in the process of development. Therefore, it can be thought that the self-reflective tendency in the work, which is different from the surface (geometric self? geometric ego?), is suggested as a typical example.

This is how the artist develops her work through the medium of self symbol. A regular tetrahedron is composed of four regular triangles. These four regular triangles harmonize into possible forms, making variations. The artist creates prints made from possible form and variations. She stitches dotted lines on the print, connecting the equilateral triangle with the equilateral triangle, suggesting another possible form. One can consider the dotted lines as invisible lines in a plan. In such way, the artist's prints resemble a planar figure for geometric shapes. The sewing symbolize relations and links. It connects separated egos together to form a united self. Partial selves have been linked together to restore a wholesome entity. The harmony forms composed of four regular triangles expands into an installation work using masking tape. It is a variation of equilateral triangles expressed by attaching masking tapes in the appropriate spots in the space, suggesting the types of possible relations and formal experimentation.

Finally, the self symbol variates into three-dimensional installation work. Regular tetrahedra which have been cut are placed to face each other. It symbolizes the self which are alike but also different, representing the logic of the situation of the ego that seem to bear similarity while being different. These tetrahedrons which are facing each other, symbolize the encounter between the self who lived in Gunsan in the past and the self living in Paris. The processed surface of the mirror reflecting each other's image can be understood as an alternative expression of relation and connection through sewing.
